The Strategic Alliance for the Fortification of Oil and other Staple Food (SAFO) is a project-based alliance between BASF and GIZ. Between 2008 and 2012, the alliance managed to reach more than 100 million people with improved nutrition, thus making a significant contribution to fighting Vitamin A deficiency, which causes both mental and physical weakness, especially in children. The case study , which studies SAFO’s approach in Tanzania, shows that project-based alliances, even though they are limited in time and scope, can make a critical contribution to systemic change when they have a clear focus, facilitate collaboration of all relevant stakeholders and define their concrete activities in dialogue with these stakeholders.
